Opportunities

Sometimes the opportunities we need are right in front of us ...........
If you lose control of yourself too easily
If you are an impatient person
 If you are too negative
If you get angry for small reasons
and sometimes for no reason at all
Then you certainly know you need certain things to be able to maintain peace and control of yourself at all times instead of being part of your own damage
Those things are : serenity , patience and positivity
But how to do that when nothing seems to help ???
It´s time to break the barrier that makes you think there can´t be progress if outside sources are agaisn´t you , that barrier is negativity , something so simple and common but that keeps you from reaching the other things you need , when you allow yourself to see a positive way in a negative reality you also become capable of changing yourself and  your reality . A problem , an obstacle or a bad emotion/habit are only strong when you decide to let them take control , but when you fight they become weaker and you become stronger . Simple and common negativity affects you so much to the point you don´t fight and don´t discover how much potential you got and how much better you can do in life .
No matter how much negative things are outside  , there´s always a positive way
and that positive way is the opportunity you have each time you go through hard times , once your vision is clear from the damage that negativity does , you´ll need to work on how to control your mind and body , remember that no matter how small something bad seems to be , within time it grows so don´t give them space , don´t allow them to grow , take every opportunity you have so day by day you become stronger and those which once did so bad to you become weaker
There´s no other way to work on control than practising it during difficult times
 the words that are said
 the things that are done
 the reactions to the situations
 are products of the mind
so beware of what´s inside you so you can resist when necessary
Whenever you manage to resist you earn an opportunity to embrace serenity , patience and positivity and discover what they really are and how good they can do for you
Once you´re in harmony with them you´re no longer that old person who were always feeding your own damage
and that gives you an opportunity to build happiness based on things that no matter what the outside sources are , they will always provide you with better ways to go
Did you ever stop to think about how many opportunities you have everyday ???
if not , you should start
 You have the opportunities
It´s time to get something good from them
 don´t wait for a miracle
when you have plenty of opportunities around
if until this point in your life you couldn´t see them
 clear your vision
Because sometimes the opportunities you need are right in front of you .

Know Your Source

The mind is under constant temptation
And irritation emerges due to the disturbance
It´s like you´re at home and a number calls to give you free things but free things which you don´t want anything to do with and the phone rings constantly
As time goes by , irritation emerges within and you end up answering the call although you were trying to avoid it all along
Now think about " home " as being your mind and the " constant calls " as being temptations
The temptations like the calls , want to give you something you don´t want but after so much struggle , you give up because you let irritation get to you and when it does , peace runs away to the point you can´t remember what it was like to have it
The everyday temptations start before the eyes and ears are presented with something negative .
It starts with the mind , with thoughts that don´t belong to the heart .
And when you start living the day , if you pay close attention , you will notice how the tv shows you watch say that betraying is normal , that lying is okay , that being selfish will lead you to success , that being greedy is part of human nature , that loving gets you hurt , that getting drunk and having meaningless sex is the way to live a happy life .....
Anything that is meaningless does not have the power to build something , specially something so meaningful as happiness . What it can only do is bring a feeling of void and unsatisfaction after a brief moment of temporary joy .
What is the reason for betraying ?
Getting personal satisfaction ! But how does a person get satisfaction from hurting and leaving someone on their side to be with a stranger on the other side ? Morality is not a rule to be followed but rather a meaningful way of life to be lived
What is the reason of greed ?
Not only economic but also status satisfaction ! But neither one of them or them combined can make you satisfied with yourself , You cannot be satisfied with yourself when all you care about is outside
What is the reason for being selfish and for lying ?
Having more for yourself , having advantages and being ahead of others !
But what is the point of being ahead of others and still leave yourself behind ?
You can be on the top , in first place and still feel like you are on a bottomless pit
 Love hurts ?
There´s people who speak about it but what is the background information they have about Love ?
From songs and movies ? from relationship dissapointments ?
Love is the biggest and the most benign of God´s fruits , it can´t be understood based on human opnions about what it is , to understand it ,  you need to get closer to the source of it
When you open your eyes and pay close attention
You will notice how the tv shows and music industry indocrinate people into having them as the main source of information and the main influential source of their everyday life
The temptation messages they send are real ! And suppose to persuade you just like the disturbing calls , remember ?
Although you may not agree with such messages , you watch them and listen to them constantly until one day during a difficult situation or opposed circumstances you´re facing , you end up acting just like the tv show preached or like the singer sang the song
And the sad thing is that you may not notice it right away because when you don´t know your heart which is supposed to be the source of your attitudes and reactions , you let any outside source get into you as if it was your own
When you don´t know your source , it gets easier for temptations to find their way in
But when you do know your source , the phone can ring constantly everyday
But you will be in the most peaceful state of being
 Know Your Source !!!!!!

Faith

This amazing element that people have been speaking of for thousands of years is able to open up doors which were locked from the inside , when a door is found locked , most people would use strength to open it but the wise know that it´s not about strength , it is about wisdom to find the right way to open it . Strength is important to fight but wisdom is essential to win , weather you fight for your dreams or fight to get up in the morning after a sad day , wisdom will help you walk towards light , the light which is called Faith .

what is the meaning of faith to you ?

according to the dictionary it means to believe in something which we cannot see happening yet
but it doesn´t tell us about the power contained in it , it´s superficial description in the dictionary send us an empty message
but
faith existed long long before we gave it a name , the power of it is contained in it´s essence and dictionaries won´t ever tell us about essence , we need to discover by ourselves and the only way is to keep it and stablish it as the tool which will lead us to success and to succeed we have to stay up even when everything around is trying to bring us down and overload our minds with messages of negative influence , weather it comes from someone around or something on television or even a disturbing thought that comes to mind , always remember that the strong can fight but only the wise can win because even when we fight for something we want , we need to believe in ourselves , the ones who fight but believe will lose , will eventually find the future they already stablished for themselves , the ones who search but believe will never find , will eventually end up in emptiness .....

because the lack of faith is like eyes closed and covered with the hands , the room can be full of light but we doubt if it´s really there , doubting our capability and the power contained in faith is like blocking vision from the light and walking in complete darkness , knowing where we want to go but not knowing the right way , faith is the light that lead us to the place we want to be .

all this may sound simple but remember that only the wise win ?

well , only the strong have faith !!!!

because sometimes it is the only thing to hold on to .

To see everything going in the opposite direction and still believe it will change can be painful and at such moments thoughts of giving up come and make us believe it is better to end the pain than keep faith but the way to success is not easy , comfortable or pleasant , the way which is full of these things is the one that lead us to frustration , regrets and emptiness because sooner or later we would wish that we could go back in time and maintain faith because we would realize that what we thought was impossible or improbable was much more possible and probable than we thought but we just did not understand it , we just did not understand much about the power of faith ....

It´s power depends on how much we believe during all times , sunny quiet days and dark stormy nights , the expression of faith must be bigger when it´s more needed , must be more alive when all is falling dead because as soon as everything falls , faith will bring a whole new world to life ....

the world from which nothing really died but got renovated to be more alive !!!

Make the heart a home for faith
and
light will shine to guide and lead you through the best way
until you reach your dreams .

Time to plant and time to harvest

Every action causes a reaction and this process happens as naturally and it happens with nature
Consider a seed of a plant that grows and takes all nutrientes from the ground and make it poor so no other plant is able to grow , it´s action has a simple , obvious and yet serious reaction
Now consider a seed of a plant that grows and takes what´s necessary for it but gives what´s necessary for other plants to grow around , it´s action of taking did not stop the giving so the reaction was as positive as it could be
Now consider the first plant to be an emotion , thought or attitude that grows and will only lead to one reaction , taking all the energy and leaving none for others to grow , it consumes and do not provide , that way it can not be considered good and healthy because what´s good and healthy takes but provides with the same intensity , like the seed of Love when it grows , it provides joy , peace within and happiness in it´s complete and pure formula
Think about the second seed which grows without ruining others but providing for them , it takes because it needs but gives because it needs as much as it needs to take , consider the grown seed an emotion , thought or attitude which develop itself allowing others to do the same , that way they all live in a harmonic cycle which never comes to an end because it´s led by mutuality
 You take and you give
but not always when you give , you will take because sometimes the ones around you do not have what to give
If you stop giving , they will never have what to give again and will lose the taking and with time forget about how wonderful it was like to take and give in the same proportions
giving without expecting to take but always taking willing to give
Sometimes you give to people around you and don´t receive back attention , care and love
but do not lower your head because you are the plant responsible for giving life to your surrounding and providing for others the same chance
Beware of your emotions , thoughts and attitudes because when they come from the plant that consumes and ruins , the only reaction will be you acting in ways you never want others to act with you
Wherever you go and with whatever kinds of people you get in contact
Always plant the seeds that will provide .....
Provide light for the ones who live in darkness
Provide attention for the lonely ones
Provide love for the ones who could never had a taste of it
It doesn´t require a big gesture but as simple as a hug or as simple as a positive word which will make all the difference for them
provide serenity for the ones in nervousness or panic
provide a helping hand for the sad ones
provide life for the hearts which are close to death
 There´s time to plant
 and there´s time to harvest
 Plant the good seeds
and you will harvest pure happiness

SpaceX Rocket Fails During Cargo Launch to Space Station

An unmanned SpaceX cargo mission crashed back to Earth today (June 28), marking the third failure of a resupply flight to the International Space Station in the past eight months.
SpaceX's robotic Dragon capsule blasted off atop the company's two-stage Falcon 9 rocket as planned today at 10:21 a.m. EDT (1421 GMT) from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, headed for the orbiting lab. But something went wrong about two minutes into the flight, and the rocket broke apart, raining debris out of the sky.
"There was an overpressure event in the upper stage liquid oxygen tank. Data suggests counterintuitive cause," SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said via Twitter today, which is, incidentally, his 44th birthday. "That's all we can say with confidence right now. Will have more to say following a thorough fault tree analysis."

SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion NASA contract to fly at least 12 unmanned supply runs to the space station. Today's liftoff kicked off mission number seven; the previous six flights had all been successful.

Today's accident follows closely on the heels of two other cargo-mission failures. Orbital ATK's Antares rocket exploded shortly after liftoff this past October, scuttling the company's third robotic cargo mission. (Orbital ATK holds a $1.9 billion deal with NASA to make eight supply flights using Antares and its Cygnus spacecraft.)
And Russia's unmanned Progress 59 vessel fell back to Earth in May without reaching the space station, apparently done in by a problem with the third stage of the Soyuz rocket that launched it to space.
Despite this recent run of setbacks, the International Space Station (ISS) remains well-provisioned into the fall, NASA officials said.
"We're good to the October timeframe if no other vehicles show up," NASA ISS program manager Mike Suffredini said during a prelaunch press conference Friday (June 26). If Dragon had made it, the $100 billion orbiting complex would have been well-stocked through the end of the year, he added.
The next Progress freighter is due to launch July 3 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
SpaceX had also aimed to land the Falcon 9's first stage on an "autonomous spaceport drone ship" during today's launch, in a test of reusable-rocket technology. The company is trying to develop fully and rapidly reusable rockets, in order to slash the cost of spaceflight.
"A jumbo jet costs about the same as one of our Falcon 9 rockets, but airlines don't junk a plane after a one-way trip from LA to New York,"SpaceX representatives wrote Thursday (June 25) about the company's reusable-rocket goals. "Yet when it comes to space travel, rockets fly only once — even though the rocket itself represents the majority of launch cost."
SpaceX had tried the rocket landing on the previous two Dragon launches, and nearly succeeded both times: The rocket stage hit the boat but came down too hard, toppling over and exploding on the deck.
Today's rocket failure nixed attempt number three, obviously.

Facts About Elephants | African Elephants & Asian Elephants

Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. They have characteristic long noses, or trunks; large, floppy ears; and wide, thick legs. There are two species of elephant. The Asian elephant and the African elephant live on separate continents and have many unique features. There are several subspecies that belong to one or the other of these two main species, though there is disagreement over just how many subspecies there are.
Size
African elephants are the larger of the two species. They grow 8.2 to 13 feet (2.5 to 4 meters) from shoulder to toe and weigh 5,000 to 14,000 lbs. (2,268 to 6,350 kilograms), according to the National Geographic. Asian elephants can grow up to 6.6 to 9.8 feet (2 to 3 m) from shoulder to toe and weigh up to 2.25 to 5.5 tons (2,041 to 4,990 kg).

Habitat
African elephants live in sub-Saharan Africa, the rain forests of Central and West Africa and the Sahel desert in Mali. Asian elephants live in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia in scrub forests and rain forests.

Diet
Elephants eat grasses, roots, fruit and bark. They use their tusks to pull the bark from trees and dig roots out of the ground.
An elephant has an appetite that matches its size. An adult can eat 300 lbs. (136 kg) of food in a day, according to the National Geographic.

Habits
A group of elephants is called a herd. The herd is led by a matriarch, which is the oldest female. Females, as well as young and old elephants, stick together in a herd. Adult males tend to wander on their own.
Elephants also have certain rules. For example, when they are meeting each other, they expect the other elephant to extend its trunk in greeting. The matriarch will often teach young elephants in her herd how to act properly.
Offspring

Male elephants are called bulls and females are called cows. After mating, the cow will be pregnant for around 22 months. When the baby elephant is finally born, it can weigh around 200 lbs. (91 kg) and stand about 3 feet (1 m) tall.
A baby elephant is called a calf. As the calf grows, it will gain 2 to 3 lbs. every day until its first birthday. By the time they are 2 or 3 years old, calves are ready to be weaned. Male calves will wander off on their own, while females will stay with their mothers. When they are 13 to 20 years old, they will be mature enough to have their own young. Elephants live 30 to 50 years in the wild.
Classification/Taxonomy
The taxonomy of elephants, according to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), is:
Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Bilateria
Infrakingdom: Deuterostomia
Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Infraphylum: Gnathostomata
Superclass: Tetrapoda
Class: Mammalia
Subclass: Theria
Infraclass: Eutheria
Order: Proboscidea
Family: Elephantidae
Genera & species: Loxodonta africana (African savannah elephant), Loxodonta cyclotis (African forest elephant), Elephas maximus (Asian elephant)
Subspecies: ITIS recognizes:
Elephas maximus indicus (Indian elephant)
Elephas maximus maximus (Sri Lankan elephant)
Elephas maximus sumatranus (Sumatran elephant)
Another possible subspecies is Elephas maximus borneensis (Borneo pygmy elephant). The World Wildlife Fund has determined that DNA evidence proves that the Borneo pygmy elephantis genetically different from other Asian elephants.

Conservation status
According to the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Asian elephant is endangered. Though it is not known exactly how many Asian elephants remain, it is believed that the population is decreasing. The African elephant is considered vulnerable. Overall, its populations are increasing. According to the African Wildlife Foundation, there are around 470,000 African elephants roaming the globe.
Other facts
The African elephant can be identified by its ears. Stretched out, its ears are shaped like the African continent. Asian elephants have smaller ears, which are more rounded on top and flat along the bottom. Heat radiates out of the elephant's massive ears, acting as a cooling mechanism.
The largest elephant ever recorded was an African elephant, according to the San Diego Zoo. It was 24,000 lbs. (10,886 kg) and 13 feet (3.96 m) tall from its feet to its shoulders.
When it gets too hot, African elephants will suck water into their trunks and then blow it back out to shower themselves with a cool mist.
An elephant's trunk has more than 100,000 muscles, according to National Geographic. They use it to breathe, pick things up, make noises, drink and smell.
In the same way that humans tend to be right-handed or left-handed, elephants can be right-tusked or left-tusked. Their dominant tusk is easy to identify, because it will be more worn down than the less dominant tusk, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
An elephant's skin can be as thick as 1 inch, but it is sensitive to the sun. To protect it, elephants will cover themselves in mud or dust.

Birds that can talk!!!

Did you know that parrots can be trained to say up to 200 words and short phrases. In fact their ability to mimic human language is so well known that many parrot owners initially purchase the bird for this reason alone.
The truth however is that like most talking birds they’re not really talking but mimicking the sounds they hear around them. They certainly don’t have any real understanding of the words they repeat and what’s more interesting is that parrots as a species are not the best of the bird mimickers.
Mynah Bird
Yes that’s right the top word mimic is actually the Mynah bird. Their ability to create amazingly realistic human and non human sounds such as words, coughs, sneezes and even cell phone ring tones is well documented.
Other birds that are extremely intelligent and known to mimic human words are crows, ravens and jackdaws. Although their abilities are less publicized.

Can a Pill Increase a Woman's Libido? 5 Things That Affect Female Sex Drive

Women with low libido could soon get a "little pill" of their own that aims to improve their sex life. Last week, an expert panel voted to recommend that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve a drug called flibanserin, which is touted as boosting women's desire for sex. If the FDA decides the drug is safe and effective, it could soon find its way into bedrooms across the United States.
Unlike Viagra, which causes more blood to flow to a man's penis, flibanserin doesn't just aim to improve a woman's physical readiness for sex. Instead, the drug purportedly works by amping up the brain's levels of dopamine and serotonin — two chemicals known to induce sex-related feelings, such as motivation, appetite and desire.
However, sexual desire is complicated, and some experts aren't sure that a pill is really the cure for an ailing female mojo.

"I'm skeptical [about flibanserin] as both a professional and as a woman," said Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, a urologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "The libido in both men and women is very complex, and it's not going to be remedied with a pill."

There are lots of things that can quell a woman's desire to have sex, Kavaler told Live Science. These range from psychological factors, such as her self-esteem and mental health, to physical factors, such as her hormone levels and how well she's sleeping, Kavaler said.
In fact, researchers have conducted dozens of studies exploring the many reasons why a woman might not feel like having sex. Here are five reasons that women may not be in the mood:
1. She's in pain.
Several studies have explored the relationship between sex and pain in women. One study, published in 2009 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, looked at women with dyspareunia — a condition that results in recurrent genital pain during intercourse and that's estimated to affect 8 to 21 percent of women worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The study found that women with dyspareunia have thoughts about pain that can be easily activated, said Lea Thaler, a researcher at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas who led the study. Shortly after that study's publication, Thaler told Live Science in an interview that women with the condition tend to be "hypervigilant about" (or constantly on the lookout for) pain during sex.
Although Thaler's study didn't focus on how this increased vigilance about pain may affect a woman's desire to have sex, other studies have explored the relationship between pain and libido. A 2014 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that female mice that are in pain are less motivated to have sex than female mice that are not in pain. The study also found that the same thing is not true for male mice, which were willing to copulate even when in pain.
The findings of this study could provide clues about how libido works in women, according to the researchers, who told Live Science that their findings could help scientists understand why women with chronic pain often experience a decreased desire to have sex.
2. She's on the pill.
Women who use hormonal contraceptives, such as the pill or the patch, are more likely to have a decreased sex drive than women who don't use hormonal contraceptives, according to a study published in 2010 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The link between hormonal contraceptives and low libido needs to be explored further, said the authors, who noted that their findings are preliminary. Specifically, the researchers said they would like to study the effects of different dosages of estrogen and synthetic progestins (two types of hormones commonly used in contraceptives) on female sexual function.
In 2013, researchers with the European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health conducted a systematic review of the literature surrounding the link between sexual desire and the use of combined oral contraceptives (which contain both estrogen and synthetic progestins). They reviewed 36 studies and found that, among the hormonal contraceptive users, 85 percent reported an increase in libido or no change in libido when taking these contraceptives, while 15 percent reported a decrease in libido. The researchers also found that women who reported a decrease in libido were taking contraceptives containing a lower dose of estrogen hormones.
3. She'd rather masturbate.
Although testosterone is the hormone most often associated with virility in men, this chemical may actually decrease a woman's desire to have sex (at least with other people), according to a study published in 2012 in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. The study, which found a link between higher levels of testosterone and decreased sex drive in women, also found that high-testosterone women were more likely to masturbate than low-testosterone women.
Interestingly, the researchers found that men's levels of testosterone did not affect sexual desire. The average man reported more sexual desire than the average woman, the researchers found.
4. She's just not that into you (anymore).
Women's desire may fade as a relationship goes on, according to a study published in 2012 in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. Researchers polled 170 heterosexual men and women who had been in relationships for between one and nine months. They found that although most participants reported feeling satisfied with their relationships and sex lives, women reported lower levels of desire related to the length of their relationships.
Specifically, the researchers found that for each additional month women were in a relationship with their partner, their sexual desire decreased by a small amount — 0.02 points on the Female Sexual Function Index (a self-reporting tool that helps scientists study female sexual arousal, pain, satisfaction and orgasm). This finding did not hold true for men, whose sexual desire remained steady over time.
"When an individual has had sex with their partner over the course of many, many years, it takes creativity and openness to keep things fresh and exciting, Sarah Murray, one of the sex researchers who conducted the study at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, told Live Science. "Making time to be together and keep one's sex life as an important part of one's relationship is very important, and putting in effort and keeping things fun and interesting are crucial components."
5. She has a headache.
Women who get frequent headaches or migraines are more likely to have dysfunctional sex lives than women without these health issues, according to a study published in 2012 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. The study, which looked at 100 women being treated for headaches, found that 91 percent of the patients' scores on a questionnaire showed they had sex problems beyond what would be considered within the normal range.
Among these problems was low sex drive. About 17 percent of the women surveyed said they weren't interested in having sex, and another 20 percent of study participants said they not only had a low sex drive, but were also distressed about their lack of desire.
There are many possible reasons why headaches and low sex drive may be linked. Research shows that any type of chronic pain affects desire and arousal, and also that people with headaches often have mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, both of which have been shown to affect sex drive and sexual satisfaction. The medications taken to treat headaches, depression or anxiety can also interfere with a woman's desire to slip between the sheets.

Dinosaur-Era Bird Sported Ribbonlike Feathers

A bird with spotted, ribbonlike tail feathers once flew around the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, a new study finds. Until researchers uncovered the bird's 115-million-year-old fossilized remains in 2011, the scientific world had evidence of birds with ribbonlike tails living only in the Northern Hemisphere. Now, researchers have proof that these unique birds also lived in the Southern Hemisphere during this critical time of bird evolution.

'Lost' Memories Restored in Mice

In a feat that calls to mind the memory-tweaking technology in the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," a team of researchers restored "lost memories" in the brains of mice.
The mice in the study were given a drug that prevented them from consolidating a fearful memory. But when neurons involved in encoding the memory were stimulated with pulses of light, the animals were able to retrieve the forgotten recollection.
In some forms of amnesia, past memories may not be erased, but may just be inaccessible for recall, said Susumu Tonegawa, director of the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Japan and co-author of the study, said in a statement. The study was published today (May 28) in the journal Science.

If the findings are confirmed in humans, the knowledge could benefit people who suffer from retrograde amnesia, an inability to recall memories that were made before the amnesia, which is common in traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease and other brain disorders.
Scientists have long debated whether retrograde amnesia results from damage to the neurons that store memories, or from a blockage of access to those memories. The majority of researchers support the storage problem theory, but this is "probably wrong," Tonegawa said.
When a memory is being formed, scientists think a population of neurons is activated and undergoes lasting physical or chemical changes. This collection of neurons is known as memory engram cells, and they can be triggered by a specific sight or smell, for instance.
In 2012, Tonegawa and his colleagues showed that a population of these engram cells exists in a brain region called the hippocampus, which is known to be involved in converting information from short-term to long-term memory. But, it wasn't clear if these groups of neurons undergo the chemical changes linked to memory consolidation.
In the new study, Tonegawa's team pinpointed a group of engram cells in the hippocampus of mice, using a technology called optogenetics. The technique involves injecting a virus into neurons that causes them to produce a light-sensitive protein, which makes the cells activate in response to light.

mouse memory experiment

In the experiment, mice were trained to fear an electric shock, and some animals were given Anisomysin to block the fear memory. When these mice's memory cells were activated using light, they showed less fearful freezing behavior than the untreated mice.

The researchers put mice in a chamber where they received a mild electric shock, and the animals quickly learned to associate the shock with the chamber. When the mice were returned to the same chamber a day later, they would freeze in fear.
After the training, the scientists gave some of the mice a chemical called anisomycin, which inhibits memory consolidation. When the mice were placed in the chamber again, they no longer froze in place, suggesting the memory of the painful shock had not been consolidated.
However, when the researchers used pulses of light to activate the neurons that encoded the electric shock memory, the mice would "remember" their fear, and freeze again when placed in the chamber.
The findings suggest that in the mice that received the memory-blocking drug, the fearful memory was not really "lost," but rather access to the memory was simply blocked, the researchers said.
"These findings are probably applicable to certain conditions of human amnesia, such as an early stage of some Alzheimer's patients," Tonegawa said

Vegan Diet Eases Nerve Pain of Diabetes

For people with diabetes, switching to a plant-based diet may ease the searing nerve pain that can come with the condition, and perhaps reduce their risk of losing a limb, a small pilot study has found.
More than half of adults with Type 2 diabetes may develop diabetic neuropathy, a type of nerve damage resulting from poor blood circulation and high levels of glucose in the blood, previous studies have shown. Diabetic neuropathy can lead to ulcers and other infections on the legs and feet, and is the primary cause of limb amputation for people with diabetes.
There's no cure for diabetic neuropathy; doctors usually treat the pain with medication and advise the patient to remain vigilant about cleaning wounds to prevent infections.

Now, in a new study that builds on previous work suggesting that a plant-based, vegan diet can be as effective as medication for treating diabetes, researchers placed 17 overweight adults with diabetic neuropathy on a 20-week low-fat diet that emphasized fresh vegetables and high-fiber, complex carbohydrates such as beans and whole grains. The participants also attended weekly nutrition classes and took a vitamin B12 supplement, a nutrient that is important for proper nerve function but found naturally only in animal products.

Compared with a control group of 17 adults who received B12 supplements but maintained their current, non-vegan diet, the group on the vegan diet reported significant improvements in pain relief. Tests also revealed improved circulation and nerve function, and these participants lost, on average, 14 pounds.
Many people in this intervention group also saw improvements in their bodies' ability to control their levels of glucose, or blood sugar, which then allowed them to lower the dose of their diabetes medication.
The study appears today (May 25) in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes and was led by doctors and nutritionists at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a non-profit organization that promotes preventive medicine and a vegan diet.
"We hypothesize that by increasing your insulin sensitivity and improving blood sugar levels, you are allowing your body time to fix the nerve damage," said Cameron Wells, a registered dietitian at PCRM and one of the authors of the study.
Wells described blood with high glucose levels as being "thick" and unable to deliver nutrients to nerve endings.
Normally, glucose is obtained from carbohydrates; and the hormone insulin, secreted by the pancreas, ferries glucose into cells, where it is used as fuel. But in people with Type 2 diabetes, insulin cannot efficiently ferry glucose from the blood into cells for reasons not entirely understood. Thus, the blood becomes laden with glucose.
Maintaining a healthy glucose level is called glycemic control.
"Glycemic control has been shown to prevent development and/or progression of diabetic neuropathy," Dr. David Simpson, a professor of neurology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York who did not work on the study, wrote to Live Science in an email. "Furthermore, diet and exercise programs, with goal of weight loss, assist in glycemic control and amelioration in progression of diabetic neuropathy."
A study published in 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at George Washington University found that lifestyle changes — diet and exercise — were twice as effective at controlling diabetes than the leading diabetes drug, metformin.
Many of the participants in the new study told the researchers they were impressed by how quickly they lost weight and improved their glycemic control on the plant-based diet, Wells told Live Science.
"It's always so rewarding to see [our patients'] reactions, because it's indicating 'I really am doing something that seems to be working,'" Wells said.
However, the new study was limited in that the researchers could not determine which element of the low-fat, plant-based diet led to the observed improvements. It could be that merely losing weight — albeit no easy task for many — was the main contributor to neuropathy pain reduction, the researchers wrote.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the annual direct cost of diabetes treatment is more than $175 billion. In the new study, the researchers noted that the cost of a diet rich in leafy greens and other plant foods is well within reach of most budgets

All 5 of Pluto's Known Moons Spied by NASA Probe (Photo)

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has snapped its first-ever family portrait of the Pluto system, capturing the dwarf planet and all five of its known moons.
New Horizons, which is speeding toward a historic flyby of Pluto on July 14, took a series of images from April 25 through May 1 using its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) camera. The shots mark the first time New Horizons has managed to resolve the extremely faint Pluto moons Kerberos and Styx, mission team members said.
"Detecting these tiny moons from a distance of more than 55 million miles [88.5 million kilometers] is amazing, and a credit to the team that built our LORRI long-range camera and [mission team member] John Spencer’s team of moon and ring hunters," New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said in a statement. [Photos of Pluto and Its Moons]

Pluto's five known satellites are Charon, Hydra, Nix, Kerberos and Styx. At 648 miles (1,043 km) in diameter, Charon is nearly half as wide as Pluto itself, but the other four moons are minuscule. Kerberos and Styx, for example, are thought to be just 4 to 13 miles (7 to 21 km) and 6 to 20 miles (10 to 32 km) wide, respectively.
The four tiny moons are visible individually in the new images, while Charon melds with Pluto in a much brighter blur at the center of the other satellites' orbits. New Horizons scientists processed the original LORRI photos extensively to reduce the Pluto-Charon glare and reveal the faint small moons.
Kerberos and Styx were first spotted in 2011 and 2012, respectively, by New Horizons team members using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The spacecraft is poised to begin a moon search of its own in the coming days, as part of an effort to identify hazards that could complicate New Horizons' July 14 Pluto flyby.
"New Horizons is now on the threshold of discovery," Spencer, who's also based at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, said in the same statement. "If the spacecraft observes any additional moons as we get closer to Pluto, they will be worlds that no one has seen before."
The $700 million New Horizons mission launched in January 2006 to conduct the first up-close reconnaissance of Pluto and its moons. Pluto has remained mysterious since its 1930 discovery because it is relatively small and lies so far from the sun; even the best Hubble images show the dwarf planet as a blur of pixels.
But New Horizons will bring Pluto into focus: On July 14, the probe will zoom within just 7,800 miles (12,500 km) of the dwarf planet's frigid surface.
